To begin with, Face Oils are pretty new to traditional skincare routines. In fact, there was a time when we didn’t know much about face oils. In general, if you’d like to know more about Face Oils, click here for: The Real Truth About Face Oils. Also, click here for The Real Truth About Face Oils Part 2. Even more, click here for Face Oils Part 3: Not All Face Oils are Evil. One thing is for sure, once you start using face oil in your skincare routine, you will find it hard to believe that you ever lived without it. However, oil can be very confusing. For example, the biggest question everyone has is when you should apply face oil? First, do you apply face oil before your moisturizer? Or, is your skincare routine last step face oil?
Another question is “does face oil replace serum”? Finally, people want to know which skin types (dry, normal, oily) can wear face oil? First, you need to learn the skincare layering rule. Next, you’ll need to find the right facial oil for your skin.
Skincare Routine Last Step Face Oil
First of all, all skin types can benefit from face oil In other words, face oil isn’t just for dry skin. Other skin types like combination skin, and oily skin, can benefit from face oil.
Even if your skin is oily, or combination, face oils should be used at Night. The reason is, sebum secretions are lowest in the evening, right before you go to sleep!
Additionally, if your skin is dry, like mine is, dry skin doesn’t produce enough sebum during the day. Therefore, you should use oil twice a day. Add oil as your last step, before you apply your SPF, and then apply your makeup.
Above all, face oil should be the last step in your skincare regime. The reason for this is , if you use facial oils before a water based moisturizer, the water based moisturizer won’t penetrate your skin effectively.
Skincare Layering Rule Last Step Face Oil
The Layering Rule goes like this, thinnest to thickest, lightest to heaviest.
Day
Step 1
First, step one is easy. Wash your face. I’ve been using Valmont Bubble Falls. It is a foam that feels like a cloud. It’s awesome!
Step 2
Second, step 2 is to apply a toner. I use Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970. In fact, I wouldn’t want to go one day without it!
Step 3
Third, step 3 is to apply your serum. Although, I like to layer my serums. Now that your skin is clean, it is ready to receive lots of precious ingredients. As a result, serums have a fast, efficient effect on your skin. The only problem with serum is, it won’t be sealed in on its own. Another part of step 3 could be emulsions. To explain, emulsions are a mix of oil and water. Also, they are cream and lotion based serums. I use one everyday. It is the Sarah Chapman Skinesis Age-Repair Serum. It is a creamy-based serum. Also, I wear the Sarah Chapman Platinum Stem Cell Elixir. This is an oil mixed with water serum/emulsion. Also, apply any eye serums.
Step 4
Fourth, step 4 is to apply your moisturizer. Also, the job of a moisturizer is to hydrate and protect your skin. Moisturizers, part oil/part water, helpyour skin retain water.
Step 5
Fifth, step 5 is to apply your face oil. Some oils are formulated to tackle signs of aging. Others are formulated to provide intense moisture to dry skin. Also Important To know, oils can penetrate moisturizers. However, moisturizers can not penetrate oils. Oils are too thick. I love the Sarah Chapman Nighttime Facial. At night, it is the last thing I apply to my face. If you try it, you’ll love the way it smells. I can’t live without it.
Step 6
The only other product you should put on top of your face oil is your sunscreen.
Your nighttime steps are the same as for daytime. Although, you can eliminate the sunscreen! You might want to use different serums. Or, you might want to remove your makeup first, then wash your face. You may want to use a different moisturizer.
Last Step Face Oil Top Coat / Coat of Armour
Think of Oil as your topcoat, or armour for your skin. First, oil allows your serums and moisturizers to go deep into your skin. In Other words, it holds all of the active ingredients in! Also, the oil top coat reduces transepidermal water loss. Additionally ,the barrier that oil creates from the outside world, prevents environmental stressors from getting inside!
Another plus, face oil adds a subtle glow to your skin!
Last Step Face Oil How To Choose The Right Oil For You
There are so many oils on the market today. Therefore, it is hard to choose the oil that is right for you. First, look for luxury-based oils instead of cheap oils. Instead, look for oils rich in omega 3, 6, and 9. Also, look for Vitamin E in the ingredients. Some good oils are Avocado Oil, Almond Oil,and MeadowFoam. These oils are rich in rich fatty acids and Vitamin E, which help to deeply moisturize your skin . Also, Vitamin E has soothing properties that help combat inflammation.
Even more, look for ingredients that are rich in antioxidants. The reason is, antioxidants will protect your skin against environmental stressors and free radicals.
Finally, look for formulas that include jojoba oil. This is because jojoba oil is the closest replica to the sebum your skin naturally produces.
My Final Thoughts on Last Step Face Oil……….
First, to apply oil, do not rub oil all over your face. Instead, use your fingers and pat the oil into your skin. A little oil goes along way! A few drops will cover your entire face! Also, you can use oil as a spot treatment. In other words, you can spot treat dry spots, or flaky spots, with oil.
Finally, like all your face products, you always apply them from thinnest to thickest. Of course, oil is the heaviest, most dense product in your skincare routine. Also, remember, oils can penetrate moisturizers, but moisturizers can not penetrate oils. Finally, moisturizers protect the skin’s moisture and elasticity. But, it is the face oil that seals everything in!
