Traits Likable People Have

Did you ever wonder what makes someone likable?  Many of us have misconceptions about the traits  likable people have.  They think a likable person is gregarious, attractive or intelligent.  WRONG!

Likable is when a person is sincere, transparent and they have the capacity to understand another person. Likable people are skilled in “emotional intelligence.”  Emotional intelligence is when a person has the capacity to be sincere, honest (not afraid to admit emotions), self aware, sensitive to other’s feelings, empathetic, and solicitous (caring for others).  Are you a person who has emotional intelligence?

All emotionally intelligent people engage in certain behaviors that make them likable:

THEY ARE GOOD LISTENERS – instead of waiting for their turn to speak, that results in not hearing a word the other person is saying, they give the person their undivided attention.  They ask them questions to clarify what they are listening to, which shows that they are listening and that they care about what the person is saying.

THEY PUT THEIR PHONES AWAY – they commit to the conversation they are engaged in, they immerse themselves in it, and they focus all of their energy on it.

THEY ARE GENUINE AND HONEST – because these qualities prove that they are trustworthy and besides, no one likes a fake!

THEY DO NOT PASS JUDGEMENT – likable people are open minded, which makes them more approachable and interesting.

THEY ARE CONSISTENT – even when they are in a bad mood, they do not let it affect how they treat other people.

THEY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR – they don’t take themselves so seriously.

THEY ARE HUMBLE

THEY CONTROL THEIR INSECURITIES – no one wants to be around a person who is always second-guessing him/her self!

THEY KNOW WHEN TO OPEN UP – they avoid complaining to others and sharing their personal problems.

Research shows that people decide whether or not they like you in the first seven seconds of meeting you!  First impressions can make or break you.  When people approach you they want to know what type of response they are going to receive.  How they do this is tied to your immediate body language.

THEY USE POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE – because how you say something can be as  important as what you say.  They look people in the eye when the are speaking or being spoken to, they lean towards the person they are conversing with, they uncross their arms, give a firm handshake, and they speak in an enthusiastic tone.

THEY GREET PEOPLE BY NAME WHEN THEY MEET – and they use their name in the course of their conversation.

THEY SMILE – smiling at a person causes them to mirror image your body language, so they’ll smile too.

THEY KNOW WHO TO TOUCH AND THEY TOUCH THEM! -touching someone appropriately is a great way to show you care.  A simple touch on the shoulder or a friendly handshake and the person will associate you with trust and other positive feelings.

THEY KNOW HOW TO GIVE AND RECEIVE COMPLIMENTS

THEY BALANCE THEIR PASSIONS WITH THE ABILITY TO HAVE FUN

People who are well liked are unique.
