UH, OH! What’s with Mac Cosmetics Summer 2016 collection? Mac says the collection was inspired by “art, outdoor music festivals, and the colors seen in the desert,” …or wasn’t it?
It is no big surprise that some controversy erupted because of the patterns on the packaging, the names of some of the collection’s shades, and even the collection itself ,that begins with the name “Tribe,” had many people thinking it had “cultural appropriation,” and “cultural insensitivity” written all over it. Mac Cosmetics held their ground and insisted that the collection had “no connection nor was it inspired by The Native American Cultures!”
Since prehistoric times people have congregated in the middle of nowhere, in the desert, where there are a myriad of colors and sounds. They would escape their everyday life to seek out and experience “ceremonial displays of love, peace and gratitude.” This desert phenomena continues today, where people still congregate, in the desert, for festivals of music and art. They escape and lose control. They become free spirited amidst the magnificent backdrop of incredible colors in the desert.
Mac’s summer Collection was inspired by the outdoor music and art festival at Coachella that takes place in the Coachella Valley in the desert. “Join in the Tribe and experience the Vibe!” is Mac’s slogan for the Vibe Tribe collection. The collection is large and it contains bronzy shades of color with pops of vibrant color for the eyes, cheeks, lips and nails.
I love the packaging. It is so tribal! I can see why it could resemble artwork from Native American Cultures. I love the colors and the design on the boxes.
I purchased a gorgeous lipstick.
Hot chocolate is a dirty plum, or a brownish plum, that has a satin texture. Mac lipsticks are always great, easy to apply, long-wearing,and comfortable to wear.
I also purchased Mac’s Patent Polish Lip Pencil in Rio Grande Romance, which is a bright fushcia pink.
And I also purchased a powdered cheek blush . The color is called Adobe Brick. It is a burnt red and it is in a satin formula.
Controversy or no controversy, this collection is stunning!
What I love about Mac’s Vibe Tribe Summer Collection is that …..there are a vast array of limited edition colors in the collection. I think all of the shades in the collection are really appealing. It was hard for me to choose, but, I must say, I love what I picked! And of course, Mac is Mac, is Mac! I just love Mac!!!! So as Mac says, “Join in the Tribe and Experience the Vibe!”
