Don’t let the word Acid scare you away! All acids are not bad. They all won’t burn holes in you or on your bathroom counter! Beta Hydroxy Acid is a multitasking standout among skincare ingredients for your skin.
In fact, BHA’s real ingredient name is Salicylic Acid. Salicylic Acid is a derivative of aspirin. Being related to aspirin is a good thing for Salicylic Acid because instead pf burning holes in you, it retains some of aspirin’s properties, and acts as an anti-inflammatory . It also acts as an antimicrobial, killing the bacteria that promote acne.and it has anti-aging benefits.
Answer these three questions to see if you are a candidate for a product containing BHA:
- Do you have red marks, sun damage, signs of aging or dry patches?
- So you have sensitive concerns like rosacea?
- Are you getting enlarged pores, blackheads and acne breakouts?
If you answer yes to any of these question, a BHA exoliant may be the treatment your skin needs.
We don’t have to choose between healthier looking skin, and younger looking skin anymore. BHA exfoliants reduce discolorations, uneven skin tone and improve the signs of aging. as well as treat clogged pores, blackheads and breakouts. BHA is able to penetrate, not only the surface of the skin, but deep into the skin ,and reach inside of the pores!
Not everyone with skin sensitivities are able to use an exfoliant. This is when BHA exfoliants should be considered, especially if you have skin disorders such as rosacea, because they have anti-redness and anti-inflammatory benefits. Topically, BHA speeds healing, treats inflammation and redness.
For fewer blackheads, blemishes and a reduction of enlarged pores BHA is able to penetrate the skin and exfoliate the oil and other substances that clog pores, which makes for a better pore lining, and helps kill the bacteria that causes acne breakouts.
If you only have issues with the surface of the skin, my article When to use an AHA product describes why AHAs are perfect for surface-level skin concerns. BHA multitasks by getting the dead surface cells, and penetrating to get deep inside the pores. Exfoliating with BHA can improve collagen production, increase skin’s ability to hold moisture, and allow pores to function normally.
Apply products containing BHA products on clean skin.
Then you can apply any product, serums, moisturizers, and sunscreens immediately afterwards.
Look for products that contain 2% BHA exfoliant.
Even though a scrub may be a good option for extra-cleansing, a scrub cannot replace a well-formulated BHA exfoliant that you leave on your skin for anti-aging benefits, unclogging pores, and for fading discolorations!
If you use BHA exfoliants, please comment below and tell me why you like them! We love hearing what you have to say, we can all learn something together!
Happy Tuesday! We love visiting with you!
You’re Awesome!
xoxo

Hello,
I have been diagnosed with Rosacea about a month ago – boohoo.
I have started to use Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant gradually, and I’ve now been using it every day for a week.
My biggest expectations are for this product to reduce my skin’s redness, but for now I can’t see any change.
How long does it take to show satisfying results on that side?
Thanks a lot 🙂
rAlexia,
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis of Rosacea. I believe that you are on the right track with the Paula’s Choice Product you have been using. According to Mediline Plus, a health info. site, “it takes time for your skin to adjust to salicylic acid treatments – you can expect an increase in skin irritation and dryness during the adjustment period – which may take a few weeks.” As you know, there is no quicky cure for Rosacea. But, according to the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, “a combination of treatments work best!” Here is a recommended skincare regime for anyone with Rosacea: use a gentle non-drying water soluble cleanser – soaps or bar cleansers!
UV Exposure Makes Rosacea Worse! You must wear at least an SPF of 15 or higher, with ingredients titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, and healig ingredients such as antioxidants, and skin repairing ingredients (look at Paula’s Choice to see what they have)
Use Foundation with Sunscreen and Pressed Powder with Sunscreen (Look at IT Cosmetics, the founder suffers from Rosacea)
At Night use a gel or light serum moisturizer formulated with many antioxidants and skin repairing ingredients and a serum with retinal helps reduce inflammatory factors that contribute to Rosacea
If you have normal to dry skin use lotion or cream moisturizers formulated with tons of antioxidants and skin repairing ingredients- and it is ok if it contains retinol
ONCE OR TWICE A DAY USE BHA TO EXFOLIATE SKIN, REDUCE REDNESS, AND ELIMINATE DRY FLAKY SKIN
Most important is to Check with your Dermatologist to see if a prescription medication , and which one, is best to treat the type of rosacea you have such as Metrogel, Metrolotion, Tazorac, Renova, Azelex, Finacea or something they think would work.
If you want to cover up the red, use a green tinted color corrector. I like Becca, or YSL or whichever you prefer, and again, the founder of It Cosmetics suffers from Rosacea so her products are designed to cover Rosacea, and I have seen her demonstration, on herself, and it really is amazing how quickly she covers major rosacea up! You can also go to http://www.rosacea-treatment.org for more information. I hope I was of some help! It is going to take some time, but it will clear up! If you have any other questions, feel free to get in touch!
Thank youuuuu so muuuuuch!!! I will look into all this.
I am French and my dermatologist is not a big fan of using a BHA exfoliant everyday – or at all, in fact. But I read so many good things about it…! I am now trying to find my own routine, and all your tips will be of great help, thanks again.
My pleasure Alexia, I’m happy that I could at least be a little helpful. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are making out! I would really like to know that you are starting to get better!!!! I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be soon! I’ll be thinking of you!
